CNN —A high-profile lawsuit filed by Elon Musk’s X targeting hate speech researchers appeared to stumble on Thursday as a federal judge sounded a skeptical note on many of the lawsuit’s allegations, suggesting that the company formerly known as Twitter hasn’t done enough to establish its claims. The judge in the case signaled he may toss out X’s claims but appeared undecided on whether to let the company amend and refile the suit. (AP) — Alabama's first-ever use of nitrogen gas for an execution could gain traction among other states and change how the death penalty is carried out in the United States, much like lethal injection did more than 40 years ago, according to experts on capital punishment. Oklahoma and Mississippi already have laws authorizing the use of nitrogen gas for executions, and some other states, including Nebraska, have introduced measures this year to add it as an option. “This is a chapter in a long-running story in the United States,” Sarat said. A majority of states, 29, have either abolished the death penalty or paused executions, and there were just 24 executions carried out in five U.S. states in 2023, according to Washington, D.C.-based Death Penalty Information Center. “More states have abolished the death penalty since 2007 than in any other comparable 17-year period in American history,” Sarat noted.

Human Rights Council cautioned they believe the execution method could violate the prohibition on torture. Dutch citizen Joran van der Sloot is also accused of extorting and defrauding the teen’s mother. But Kelly confirmed to CNN that van der Sloot intends to plead guilty in connection to the case. Dabney O'Riordan has joined the firm's SEC enforcement practice as a partner in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.O'Riordan was the longest serving head of the SEC’s Division of Enforcement’s Asset Management Unit before leaving the agency in September, according to the 900-attorney firm. At Quinn Emanuel, she will represent asset managers that handle private funds including private equity managers, hedge fund managers, mutual fund advisors and ETF advisors, she said. “There’s a lot of rulemaking going on in the asset management space,” said O'Riordan, who joined the SEC in 2005. She also knew some of her new colleagues before joining, including co-chairs of the firm’s SEC enforcement defense practice, Michael Liftik and Sarah Heaton Concannon, O'Riordan said.
